Intelliglass So cool! dramatically reducing building air-conditioning costs with an active facade

    Abstract:
All big cities in the World have large buildings with huge glass facades. They look good, but the massive use of glass introduces severe problems from overheating in countries with strong solar radiation like Spain, Italy, Greece, USA, Mexico, India, Dubai, China, etc. This problem is typically solved by using strong air conditioning systems, which consume a lot of energy, or by careful/sustainable design of the building. IntelliGlass has developed a new type of glazing that supports the sustainable design and construction of buildings. Its design resembles a conventional double glazing, but it incorporates a chamber with flowing water inside. The water blocks the infrared radiation from the sun, thus letting the light in, but not the heat. This results in savings of 70% and more in air-conditioning costs and improves thermal comfort in the building because of the climatization capabilities of the new glazing. The technology is now market-ready and has already been deployed in some pilot buildings. In the seminar a description of the technology will be given and the projects accomplished will be presented and discussed, showing the opportunities of the developed facade system and its potential for energy savings.
